The Bandini family
Patriarch: Juan Bandini (1800 Lima, Peru – 1859 Los Angeles)
A Peruvian-born merchant's family, the Bandinis became central to San Diego society in the Mexican period, holding ranchos on both sides of the modern border. Their landed weight was reinforced less by many male heirs than by strategic marriages of the daughters to wealthy Anglo settlers (Stearns, Couts).
Origin
Juan Bandini was born in Lima, son of the Spanish sea-captain José Bandini, and emigrated to California in 1819, a merchant-immigrant rather than a soldier-founder. He became a leading San Diego political figure and ranchero.
