The Bernal family

Patriarch: Juan Francisco Bernal (1737 Sinaloa – )

From an Anza-colonist household the Bernals became a Santa Clara Valley and San Francisco land-holding family, holding Rancho Santa Teresa, Valle de San José, and the San Francisco Rincón de las Salinas that gives Bernal Heights its name.

Origin

Juan Francisco Bernal came overland on the 1775–76 Anza expedition with his wife and seven children and settled at the San Francisco presidio; his descendants received a cluster of Bay Area and Santa Clara Valley grants.
