The Nieto family
Patriarch: Manuel Nieto (soldier; d. 1804)
The single vast Nieto grant of 1784 was partitioned by Governor Figueroa in 1834 among the widow and heirs into five great ranchos (Los Coyotes, Los Alamitos, Las Bolsas, Los Cerritos, Santa Gertrudes) covering much of present southeast Los Angeles and northern Orange counties. Marriages tied the heirs to the Cota family.
Origin
Manuel Nieto was a leather-jacket soldier who arrived with the 1769 Portolà expedition; in 1784 Governor Fages granted him the enormous Rancho Los Nietos, one of the first three private grants in California.
