The Verdugo family
Patriarch: Corporal José María Verdugo (c. 1751 – 1831); with his brother Mariano de la Luz Verdugo
The Verdugos held Rancho San Rafael, one of the three earliest private grants (1784), across the Glendale–Burbank area for three generations before its famous loss to foreclosure in the American period. It is a smaller dynasty (fewer distinct register grants) but a foundational one.
Origin
The Verdugo brothers, José María and Mariano, came from Baja California with the 1769 Rivera/Portolà expeditions and served as soldiers; José María received Rancho San Rafael in 1784, one of the earliest California grants.
