Isla de la Yegua (Mare Island), granted 1840 by Gov. Jimeno and 1841 by Gov. Alvarado to Victor Castro; the claim was later held by Bissell and Aspinwall. U.S. land case ND 311, confirmed by the Board and the District Court; the U.S. Navy bought the island in 1853 for its shipyard. Present-day Solano County. Mapped outline traced from the 1850 U.S. Coast Survey chart of Vallejo and Mare Island Strait; the Navy later filled and enlarged the island.
